US President Donald Trump has warned business partners from trading with Iran, following his re-imposing economic and financial sanctions after pulling his country out of the historic Iran deal.
“Anyone doing business with Iran will NOT be doing business with the United States. I am asking for WORLD PEACE, nothing less,” Trump tweeted on Tuesday.
Trump said, “The Iran sanctions have officially been cast,” adding, “These are the most biting sanctions ever imposed, and in November they ratchet up to yet another level.”
He praised on Monday the “international firms (which) have already announced their intent to leave the Iranian market,” as well as the “several countries (which) have indicated that they will reduce or end imports of Iranian crude oil.”
“We urge all nations to take such steps to make clear that the Iranian regime faces a choice: either change its threatening, destabilising behaviour and reintegrate with the global economy or continue down a path of economic isolation,” Trump added in a statement.
The US re-imposed on Monday a wave of economic sanctions against Iran that were lifted under the nuclear deal signed in 2015.
In May, Trump’s administration announced that the US would withdraw from the international accord known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), going against the European Union (EU) countries’ stance, who tried to persuade Trump to not take such action.
The EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini and the foreign ministers of France, Germany, and the UK pledged in a joint statement to “protect European economic operators engaged in legitimate business with Iran, in accordance with EU law and with UN Security Council resolution 223.”
“We deeply regret the re-imposition of sanctions by the US,” the joint statement read.
Hours before re-imposing US sanctions, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani dismissed on Monday the US calls for talks after Trump pulled his country out of the nuclear accord.
“If you stab someone with a knife and then you say you want talks,” Rouhani said, “then the first thing you have to do is remove the knife.”
“They are imposing sanctions on Iranian children, patients, and the nation,” Rouhani added.
In July 2015, Iran and six nations—China, France, Russia, the UK, the US (under Barack Obama), and Germany—reached a historic deal over limiting Tehran’s nuclear programme in return for lifting sanctions.
