The UN Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura invited Egypt, Britain, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Germany, France, and the United States for talks in Geneva next month
Egypt will attend the talks, which is considered “an opportunity to discuss the way ahead on the political process,” UN spokesperson Alessandra Vellucci said.
It is scheduled to take place in Brussels on 14 September. It is further expected to open discussions among members of the international community over the Syrian conflict to create new pledges, as well as to support the resilience of refugee-hosting countries. Vellucci said that “this is going to be an opportunity to discuss the way ahead on the political process.”
This is not the first time where Geneva hosted talks related to the Syrian conflict, in hopes for ending the civilian war, reaching a reconciliation, as well as draft a new constitution and new elections.
A UN spokesperson said on Tuesday that De Mistura will meet officials from the invited countries, Reuters reported. Afterwards, he is due to meet officials from Russia, Turkey, and Iran from 11-12 September. The UN Syria envoy is assigned by the UN to form a committee of Syrians to form a new constitution.
Hundreds of thousands of people have been killed in Syria since the beginning of the uprising in 2011. The uprising turned into a civil war, and the regime of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad brought forces of his Iranian and Russian allies, in addition to the Lebanese Hezbollah militia, to support him against armed rebels. On the other side, hundreds of jihadists from all over the world travelled to Syria to support the Syrian rebels and the Free Syrian Army fighting against Al-Assad.
In April 2018, Egypt attended the second international conference organised by the European Union and the UN on “supporting the future of Syria and the region,” which is scheduled to take place in.
The conference aimed to discuss humanitarian aid to the Syrians affected by the civil war that is now in its eighth year. More than 85 countries and organisations will attend the conference at the ministerial level.
