Twelve people sustained minor injuries after a train near Shebin Al-Kom in Menoufiya governorate derailed off its main tracks early on Sunday, according to Spokesperson of the Ministry of Health Khaled Megahed.

He also said that all the injured were sent to a hospital for medical treatment, some recovered and only two will remain hospitalised for being suspected to have post-concussion.

Meanwhile, the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Transportation Mohamed Ezz explained in media statements that the train derailed because the front wheel fell off the front train carriage.

The Egyptian National Railway Authority headed by Ashraf Raslan decided to form a technical committee to be sent to inspect the scene and to disclose reasons behind the incident.

The committee will include engineers and technicians at the highest level to fix the train to determine the failures.

Egypt’s railways have suffered for a long time from a lack of safety standards throughout successive governments. According to an official statement by the Egyptian National Railways and the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics in 2017, a total of 12,326 rail accidents took place from 2006/2017.
