Zayed decrees covering non-regular workers with health insurance

The Minister of Health Hala Zayed decreed on Monday the implementation of health insurance to cover constructions, salt evaporation ponds, and quarry workers.

According to the decree Number 480 of 2018, the Ministry of Social Solidarity will be responsible for collecting contributions from workers, which will be 1% of the worker basic payment and 4% from the employer.

Around 264 labourers will enjoy health insurance, according to Soheir Abdel-Hamid, head of the new Health Insurance Authority.

The decree, according to the Health Ministry statement, came in response to President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi directions to developing the health insurance system to cover non-regular workers.

Earlier in February, Al-Sisi called on the government to take serious proceedings to improve workers statues through issuing a law protect their rights in health services and pensions.

In recent statements, Mohamed Saafan, minister of manpower said that by the end of the year, the ministry will finish registration of non-regular labourer.

The number of non-regular workers in Egypt is not specified, but it estimated with millions. Those workers enjoy no privileges that may including fair payments, pensions or health and social insurance.
