President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi pardoned 3,682 prisoners on Saturday on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of 6th of October War victory, according to a statement by the Ministry Of Interior.
The pardon list included over 800 debtors, whose debts were paid by the Tahya Misr Fund, and other civil society organisations.
Egypt regularly grants pardons to prisoners on major religious and national occasions.
Article 155 of the Egyptian constitution, stipulates that the president has the power to issue a pardon, or mitigate a final sentence, after consulting with the cabinet.
The decision comes in line with the Ministry of Interior’s keenness to uphold human rights values, and apply penal policy in its modern approach.
