As the world heads towards the 5G era, Chinese smartphone maker Oppo conducted the first group video call using 5G technology. The experiment was performed by a team of engineers for six of the company’s research and developing institutes, the call was made by one of Oppo’s newest phones, OPPO R15 Pro-based, and lasted for 17 minutes without any technical glitches.
The test was carried out by using Keysight UXM, which is usually used to support simultaneous cellular and Wi-Fi testing, to simulate 5G frequencies. “We are working to develop our research efforts, which focus on 5G services, in order to become one of the leading companies in this field” Tony Chen, founder and CEO of Oppo said.
Countries like South Korea and the United States have moved early to create a research centre to develop practical uses for the 5G technology, which is estimated to add $565bn to the global economic output over the next 15 years, if it is used to connect robots or other applications.
But governments will first need to harmonise standards for the award of the so-called millimetre-wave spectrum, which can carry the vast data flows needed to power the 5G services, the Global System for Mobile Associations (GSMA) industry association said in a recent report. The GSMA is the global trade body representing the mobile telephone industry.
