Cairo Criminal Court sentences Ahmed Doma for 15 years in prison

Defendant faces charges of possessing white weapons, assaulting security forces in ‘Cabinet Clashes’

The Cairo Criminal Court sentenced activist Ahmed Doma for 15 years in prison and fined him EGP 6m in his retrial in the case of ‘Cabinet Clashes’. He was accused of committing violence and sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Doma’s trial was attended by representatives from the EU and a number of political activists. He is facing a number of charges after the clashes which occurred in December 2011 in front of the cabinet and the parliament.

In October 2017, the Cassation Court cancelled the previous verdict of sentencing Doma with 25 years in prison, the verdict which was issued in July 2017. He was also fined EGP 10,000 “for insulting the judiciary” after a tense exchange with the judge.

A number of 269 defendants were facing the charges of this lawsuit, most of them were sentenced in absentia.

The general prosecution accused Doma of demonstrating while possessing white weapons and drugs, as well as assaulting security individuals, in addition to taking part in the burning of the Scientific Complex.

The 2011 clashes occurred after protesters organised a sit-in at the cabinet’s headquarters to oppose the appointment of Kamal El-Ganzoury as the prime minister by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces. The military police attempted to disperse the sit-in, resulting in a deadly violence which lasted for four days.
