The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) discussed with its local and international partners the development of Egypt’s livestock production systems, during a three-day technical workshop, held last week, to formulate livestock development scenarios 2050 in Egypt under the Africa Sustainable Livestock 2050 project funded by the USAID.
Representatives from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, and the ministries of agriculture and land reclamation, health, and environment attended the event. Other attendees included the General Organization for Veterinary Services, the Animal Health Research Institute, the Animal Production Research Institute, and the Egyptian Poultry Association, representing the private sector.
The objectives of the workshop were to formulate with the participants’ different future scenarios toward 2050, describing the expected development of poultry, bovine, and fish production systems based on dietary protein requirement from animal origins, to explore the future impact of different scenarios on public health, livelihood and environment, and to identify the challenges and risks related to each scenario, as well as to ensure sound planning for the future development of livestock production in general.
The workshop aimed to understand the long-term growth trends of livestock systems and develop scenarios to comprehend their potential impacts on health, environment, and peoples’ livelihoods, as well as identifying policy reforms which assist in effectively dealing with the emerging challenges associated with the long-term growth trends of the livestock system.
