The Tobruk Parliament on Wednesday denounced the Qatari and Turkish “flagrant” intervention into its affairs, calling on the UN Security Council to support the Libyan efforts in “fighting terrorists” in Tripoli.
In a statement, the parliament’s defence and national security committee condemned the “unacceptable” intervention from Qatar and Turkey and their support of terrorist militias to keep Libya unstable and trapped in chaos through supplying terrorist groups with cash and weapons.
The parliament also criticised the Qatari statement in the United Nations which opposed the campaign led by the Libyan National Army (LNA) to clean up the capital from “militias of money and terrorism.”
Meanwhile, the LNA spokesperson Ahmed al-Mesmari, also denounced on Tuesday the Qatari intervention and its comments regarding the army’s recent campaign, asserting that Qatar has been supporting the terrorists.
The recent escalation came a day after Qatar’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al-Thani, called for an effective arms embargo on the LNA, headed by Khalifa Haftar, and the withdrawal of its troops from areas it has recently controlled.
In an interview with an Italian newspaper La Repubblica on Tuesday, Al-Thani said he was satisfied after his French counterpart told him that Paris was working on holding a previously planned national reconciliation conference in Libya.
The Qatari minister also clarified that the Libyan conflict could be ended by imposing an effective arms embargo that “prevents those countries that supply Haftar with ammunition and modern weapons from continuing to do so.”
Since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi, Libya has remained in chaos, as the Islamic State group gained a foothold in Sirte, the birthplace of Gaddafi, before it was recaptured in 2016.
