The Ministry of Health announced on Thursday that it has conducted more than 145,307 surgery operations until the end of April as part of the presidential initiative for finishing the urgent waiting lists, according to the Minister of Health, Hala Zayed, in a statement on Tuesday.
The Health Ministry’s spokesperson, Khaled Mogahed, said that the average number of performing operations has increased by more than 1,000 operations per day (from 697 to 1,024) in order to avoid the accumulation of new lists, particularly in certain cases such as open heart surgeries, ophthalmitis, and catheter surgeries.
He added that the performed operations included 71,466 heart catheters operations, 13,018 open heart surgeries, 39,881 ophthalmology surgeries, 5,464 neurosurgeries, 6,788 orthopaedic surgeries, 7,422 tumour surgeries, 957 cochlear implantations, 139 kidney transplantations, and 172 liver transplantations.
Notably, all surgeries and medications that patients receive are free of charge.
Mogahed added that the hospitals of the ministry of health participating in the initiative conducted 96,235 surgeries, out of the number of operations that were conducted free of charge.
