Alexandria criminal court sentenced five defendants to life in prison, and other 39 were handed 15 years prison sentence on accusation of joining the Muslim Brotherhood terrorist group.
The case dates back to 2018 when the security director of Alexandria received a notification from the public security officers to arrest 44 suspected members of the Muslim Brotherhood for carrying out acts of sabotage, burning three vehicles, and threatening citizens in the El-Soyoof area of Alexandria.
The prosecution charged the defendants with joining a banned group, vandalism, possessing flammable materials, setting cars ablaze, and assaulting citizens.
The defendants can still appeal the sentence.
Last Tuesday, Cairo’s Court of Cassation upheld the death sentence against 13 defendants and life sentences against 17 defendants accused in the “Ajnad Misr” case.
Late Prosecutor-General Hisham Barakat referred the defendants to the Giza Criminal Court based on evidence of targeting security personnel in different areas nationwide.
Egyptian authorities have accused the Brotherhood of inciting violence in the country after the ouster of the former Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.
The Muslim Brotherhood was labelled as a terrorist organisation in 2013, following a court decision that banned the group and held them accountable under Article 86 of the Egyptian penal code.
