Environment Minister highlights Egypt’s efforts to combat climate change

Minister of Environment, Yasmine Fouad, highlighted on Wednesday, the Egyptian efforts for increasing the ability of Africa to combat the impacts of climate change. She also referred toward Egypt’s efforts for unifying African demands to reach two environmental agreements.

These efforts resulted in signing the agreement of the renewable energy initiative, and the adaptation initiative, as well as getting $10bn in funds for the renewable energy initiative.

During her speech in the African Cities, Engine for Sustainable Development Conference, Fouad explained the experience that Egypt has taken to face climate change starting by creating a supportive climate inside the country.

As part of these efforts, the state has established the National Council for Climate Change, which aims to establish clear legislation and form an institutional entity to deal with climate change and its effects, especially since climate change does not differentiate between countries and peoples but destroys development paths.

The minister noted that there are many successful examples such as Egypt’s Transport, which implements the idea of ​​sustainable transport funded by the Climate Change Fund. She added that Africa is adapting to climate changes that is occurring at an unprecedented speed.

The African Cities, Engine for Sustainable Development Conference is being held from 18 to 20 June in Cairo. In addition to the African participants, ministers of Local Development, and Housing are participating in the conference.

Meanwhile, Fouad discussed waste management with Ayat Soliman, the regional director in the World Bank (WB) for sustainable development in the Middle East. The meeting also addressed climate change, and marine plastic pollution.
