In Egypt, the first surgery procedure of its kind was the freezing of ovarian tissue, which is an ideal solution for women who suffer from any chronic diseases directly affecting the ovaries or cancer patients.
The surgery was conducted by Professor Fadel Shaltout with Professor Hisham El Anany and under the supervision of Professor Mohamed Hady, Director of laboratories Group Gannah Hospital for microscopic injection for an 18-year-old girl suffering from a tumour on the ovary.
The surgery was safely execute and before initiating chemotherapy–which would adversely affect ovarian tissues, and thus lose the ability to give birth. The Department of Gynaecology at Cairo University, Faculty of Medicine, Qasr Al-Ainy, is proud to be the first to offer this opportunity to its patients.
Therefore, without administering the required booster doses, the ovaries are removed before chemotherapy is given and the ovarian tissue is frozen after it is processed to be re-implanted after treatment with cancer or chemotherapy.
The implanted ovaries can then be activated and the eggs extracted can be used in micro-injections.
