The Egyptian army thwarted a suicide attack near a security checkpoint in Sheikh Zuweid city, North Sinai, according to a Thursday Armed Forces statement.
An unidentified attacker wearing an explosives belt attempted to target a security checkpoint near a parking lot in Sheikh Zuweid, but the security forces shot him before arriving to the checkpoint, yet his belt detonated killing an Egyptian soldier, the statement added.
Egypt has launched a comprehensive military operation in February 2018, dubbed “Sinai 2018”, to confront militants in Sinai, Nile Delta, and Western Desert.
Since October 2014, a state of emergency has been imposed in the North Sinai.
The governorate has been rocked by scores of terrorist attacks since 2013, targeting security personnel, mostly carried out by the Islamic State group’s branch in Sinai.
