Pope Tawadros II of Alexandria on Monday led a Mass to commemorate the first death anniversary of bishop Epiphanius of St. Macarius Monastery who was killed on 29 July 2018.
Pope Tawadros II said in his speech that Epiphanius was known for his moderate thoughts, and he was admired by all the people he knew.
He added that the late bishop was an honest person, adding that he graduated from the faculty of medicine and served as monk, until he was named bishop.
“He has friends at every place and was sincere in everything,” Pope Tawadros noted.
In April, the Damanhur Criminal Court sentenced two defrocked monks accused of killing Epiphanius to death after referring their papers to Egypt’s Grand Mufti for consideration over the death penalty.
Monk Philotheos and Monk Isaiah were found guilty of killing Epiphanius after the former confessed that he committed the murder.
Days after the death of Epiphanius, the Coptic Church has announced that it would stop accepting new monks for a year starting 1 August 2018, in addition to other restrictive orders.
