President of the Press Syndicate, Diaa Rashwan, said the syndicate supports the journalists of the private-run Al-Tahrir newspaper who are protesting against the administration’s decision to reduce their salaries.

He said that the syndicate will continue negotiations until the journalists receive their rights. Last Sunday, Rashwan held a meeting with Al-Tahrir journalists and the newspaper’s management for almost seven hours.

The journalists announced their refusal to receive any financial dues for the month of September, confirming their demands to receive full financial dues, and their total rejection of the decision issued by the newspaper’s management.

The journalists who completed three rounds of strikes said in statement on Saturday that they will be starting a 48-hour-long hunger strike as they will escalate against the newspaper’s administration, and the abuse against a large number of colleagues, who declared their rejection of the decision. They announced that they will only stop the strike when their demands are met.

Since mid-September the journalists staged a strike against an arbitrary decision by Chairperson of Al-Tahrir, Akmal Kortam, to reduce their salaries to EGP 900.
