Egypt’s Education Minister, Tarek Shawky, announced on Monday the dismissal of 1,070 teachers over their affiliation to the outlawed group of Muslim Brotherhood as well as those who were convicted in various cases, according to the state-run newspaper Al-Ahram.
During a press conference held on Monday to discuss the problems of teachers in Egypt, the minister explained that there will be a general framework to choose teachers based on efficiency.
“The ministry will only choose those who are interested in becoming teachers. The recruitment process will be conducted by education experts and members of the committee of education in the parliament,” Shawky said.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Education for Teachers’ Affairs, Mohamed Omar, said during a TV interview with Sada El-Balad TV channel that the dismissed teachers are adopting extremist ideas, some of whom were convicted in various cases, noting that the government is continuing to purge the ministry of terrorist group members.
Omar added, “The Ministry of Education was infiltrated after 2011 by Muslim Brotherhood members, and there was an attempt to change the curriculum into their favour.”
He also confirmed that the coming period will witness the dismissal of more teachers belonging to the outlawed group.
The ministry has a mechanism to discover teachers who promote or adopt extremist ideologies.
