US President Donald Trump said that the US plans to cooperate with “like-minded nations” to promote security in next-generation 5G networks in a letter to the 2019 World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC) in Egypt.
Trump said the US intended “to deploy 5G services rapidly” and was “in opposition to those who would use 5G as a tool to expand control of their own citizens and to sow discord among nations.”
The US has been pressing nations not to grant China’s Huawei Technologies Co access to future 5G networks, while the Chinese company has repeatedly denied.
Trump has held numerous calls with foreign leaders, including British Prime Minister Boris Johnson in August, to urge them not to let Huawei use 5G networks.
President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi opened on Monday the WRC in Sharm El-Sheikh, which is scheduled to last until 22 November.
The conference, which is organised by the UN agency’s International Telecommunication Union (ITU) being held for the first time in 20 years outside the ITU headquarters in Geneva.
Previously, Johnson said he is preparing to allow the Chinese firm Huawei to win access to Britain’s future 5G telecoms network — endorsing Theresa May’s decision that sparked a cabinet crisis.
