A Sudanese court will issue its verdict in the corruption trial of Sudan’s ousted president Omar Al-Bashir on 14 December during a court session on Saturday.
The session started while the former leader’s supporters staged a protest outside the court, to reject handing Al-Bashir to an international judiciary for war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity.
“It has been decided that on December 14 a session will be held to deliver the verdict,” said Judge Sadek Abdelrahman who is heading the session.
The judge also said in press statement that he devoted the last part of Saturday’s session to hear witnesses of the defense and lawyers.
Bashir has been facing trial in a Khartoum court since August on charges of illegally acquiring and using foreign funds, offences that could send him behind bars for more than a decade.
“Authorities had seized €6.9m, $351,770 and 5.7m Sudanese pounds at Al-Bashir’s home which he acquired and used illegally,” the judge said previously in August.
Al-Bashir has been detained since being ousted from power in April after months of protests. The ousted president was initially facing charges of illegally possessing foreign currency, corruption.
He was also charged in May with incitement and involvement in the killing of protesters, and prosecutors also want him questioned over suspected money laundering and terrorist financing.
Additionally, he has been indicted by the International Criminal Court in The Hague on charges of masterminding genocide in Sudan’s Darfur region.
