Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi directed the government to increase its development efforts in the Sinai Peninsula to provide more job opportunities and increase the per capita income there, according to the presidential spokesperson.
Al-Sisi held a meeting on Sunday with top state officials, including Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Ministers of Agriculture and Irrigation, and others to tackle the state development efforts in the peninsula, and the project of rehabilitating and cultivating 400 feddan, east Suez Canal.
Meanwhile, Al-Sisi called for upgrading the conditions of residents in Sinai, asserting that maintaining security and stability are key elements in making development strategies in Sinai a success.
Earlier this month, Al-Sisi inaugurated several new development projects in Suez and South Sinai, revealing that the total investments injected into Sinai in the last period reached EGP 800bn.
At that time, the president added that the cost of establishing new roads in South Sinai amounted to EGP 5.5bn.
Egypt is currently implementing several projects, including establishing roads, bridges, housing projects, and water desalination plants in Sinai.
A state of emergency has been imposed on Sinai since 2014. Egypt’s army and police have launched a comprehensive campaign to confront militants in central and north Sinai, the Nile Delta, and the Western Desert.
The peninsula has been rocked by hundreds of terrorist attacks mostly claimed by the local branch of the Islamic State (ISIS). The terrorist group is also responsible for hundreds of terrorist attacks against the country over the past five years.
