The Tahya Masr fund ‘long live Egypt’ announced on Monday that it has conducted medical examination on 450 thousand primary school students as part of the first phase of the presidential initiative “Nour Al-Hayat”.
The presidential initiatives target early detection and treatment of the causes of visual impairment and vision loss in 10 governorates: Qaliubiya, Sharqeya, Daqahleya, Suez, Beni Suef, Minya, Qena, Luxor, Alexandria, and Matrouh.
The fund’s Acting Executive Director Tamer Abdel Fattah, said in a statement that the first phase of Noor Al-Hayat schools’ initiative aims to conduct medical examinations for 900,000 students during the current school year.
He explained that the initiative targets 120 thousand students in 135 schools in Qaliubiya, 120 thousand students in 249 schools in Dakahlia, 120 thousand students in 276 schools in Sharqeya, 120 thousand students in 331 schools in Beni Suef, 120 thousand students in 288 schools in Minya, 120 thousand students in 306 schools in Qena, 60 thousand students in 199 schools in Luxor, 60 thousand students in 109 schools in Suez, 120 thousand students in 156 schools in Alexandria, and 30 thousand students in 151 schools in Matrouh.
Abdel Fattah further explained that the initiative is planning to provide 132 thousand eye-glasses free of charge for students expected to be infected during the first phase of the initiative. According to the statement, the rate of infection is between 10% and 20% among students, and statistics of the initiative revealed that students in rural areas are less likely to develop causes of weakness and vision loss compared to their counterparts in urban areas.
He pointed out that 42 thousand eye-glasses have been delivered to students who were found affected so far, noting that the initiative gives each student the options to select their preferred glasses in terms of form and colour.
