Egypt’s Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad participated in the activities of the ministerial part of the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP25, which is currently being held in Madrid, Spain.
On Monday, Fouad delivered the speech of Egypt, in which she emphasised the right of Africa to obtain appropriate support during the coming period to meet the requirements necessary to combat the impacts of climate change.
In her speech, Fouad highlighted Africa’s rights to development as it is more vulnerable to the climate change and has the lowest contribution of greenhouse gases in the world.
She also called upon developed countries to fulfil their obligations of the pre-2020 period and provide the obliged $100bn annually in financing combating climate change, according to the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
“It is time for developed countries to fulfil their obligations towards Africa,” said Fouad.
Moreover, Fouad called upon all countries to do better and quicken the pace in combating climate change and to do so in a way that does not compromise the legitimate rights of developing nations in their pursuit towards economic and social development and eradicating poverty.
The minister will hold a series of bilateral meetings with her counterparts from different countries in order to discuss the activation of the Paris Agreement and ensure that the needs of developing countries are met. These needs include technology transfer, capacity development, and financing procedures.
She will also meet with the representative of the United Kingdom, which will host the next Climate Change Conference COP26.
