Prominent lawyer Mortada Mansour will run for the position of Head of Lawyers Syndicate in upcoming election scheduled on 15 March. Mansour, who is also member of parliament, announced his intention in a press statement on Sunday in the parliament after a plenary session.
He explained that his electoral programme is based on preserving the dignity of lawyers, and that there should be balanced relations between all lawyers, and those who deal with them, including judiciary, police, and journalists.
He said he would submit his candidacy papers for Lawyers Syndicate on Thursday. The Syndicate will receive candidacies from 30 January to 2 February.
“I aim to serve lawyers as I did for Zamalek Club and the people of my constituency,” Mansour said, referring to his being also president of Zamalek club.
He continued: “This does not mean that I’s candidate representing Zamalek, but rather that I am a candidate for all lawyers in Egypt.”
Sameh Ashour, current head of the syndicate, said the next election will be held under judicial supervision to emphasise the transparency and credibility of the electoral process.
Elections will be held in March on the seats of president, board members, and the sub-unions in the governorates, according to the recently-approved amendments to the Syndicate’s bylaws.
In January 2018, Mansour announced his candidacy to run for president but later withdrew.
