Egypt’s Minister of Social Solidarity Nevine El-Kabbaj has said that EGP100m has been set as compensation for families that were affected by a wave of bad weather that included a storm and heavy rainfall last weekend.
The amount, which came in participation with charities that are part of the presidential initiative “A Decent Life,” Tahya Misr Fund, Zakat House, and the Egyptian charity, will be spent for covering losses that resulted from the unstable weather, rebuilding houses that were collapsed, and to compensate owners of crops and livestock across the country.
During a meeting held Saturday, El-Kabbaj thanked the participating charities for their support and efforts during the last few days. She reviewed the deaths, injuries, destroyed houses, material losses, crops, and livestock deaths which resulted from the two-day storm and floods.
In the meantime, El-Kabbaj praised the cooperation with other ministries in reaching the number of affected families which was estimated at 7,750 families.
At least 21 people died due to the storm.
Among the deaths were eight people, including three children who were killed when four shacks collapsed in Cairo’s informal area of Eshash Zarayeb (May 15 suburb), leaving others displaced, or missing.
The storm also caused a railroad collision between two trains on Thursday, wounding 13 people.
Thursday’s wave of bad weather is the second to hit the country since unseasonal rains in October 2019, which led to hours of traffic jams as rains flooded roads and tunnels, leading to the death of several children and civilians.
