US citizens have left Cairo International Airport on Wednesday on board an exceptional EgyptAir flight to Washington, the US Embassy in Cairo said.

Their departure from Egypt comes in spite of flight suspensions in light of the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The embassy team was able to see off hundreds of US citizens for their flight back to the US, the embassy mentioned.

The embassy added,“We’ll continue to work closely with EgyptAir and our other partners here to bring Americans home.”

A further Cairo-Washington flight is scheduled for Friday, which is currently full, the embassy said. It called on US citizens in Egypt to keep trying with EgyptAir if they need to depart urgently.

The embassy is currently working EgyptAir to try to arrange more direct flights to the US, it said.

Egypt suspended international flights at all its airports  between 19 and 31 March, in efforts to curb the spread of the coronavirus. The government later extended the ban on international flights to mid-April.
