E-commerce platform Jumia has joined the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade’s Ahlan Ramadan (Welcome Ramadan) initiative, which started on 10 April, to provide basic commodities and food products at discounted prices during the holy month.
Jumia has set up a window on the Ahlan Ramadan platform and app to showcase the basic products with discounts according to the type of commodity. Jumia is working in cooperation with its business partners, including brands, stores, and commercial chains.
Ayman Hossam El Din, Assistant Minister for Internal Trade at the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade, said Jumia’s participation is an important step organised by the ministry in providing basic discounted commodities to Egyptian consumers.
He added that Jumia’s participation will also help ease crowding at traditional commercial chains, especially whilst the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is ongoing.
Hisham Safwat, CEO of Jumia Egypt, said, “I also expect that the share of electronic commerce platforms from the Egyptian market will expand significantly during the coming periods.”
Safwat said that the initiative provides for customer needs via an e-platform without the need for leaving home and facing crowds at traditional grocery stores. Online markets also provide a window for sellers, partners, and trademark owners to reach their customer base digitally, and continue to provide products to their customers.
He explained that the initiative comes as part of directives announced by President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and in full partnership with the government represented by the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade.
