The first phase of the Qalma Bridge on the Cairo-Alexandria Agricultural Road has been completed, according to Minister of Transportation Kamel Elwazir.
The bridge, which has three lanes in both directions, will soon be open to vehicles moving between Cairo and Alexandria.
Elwazir said that the bridge’s second phase, in the Alexandria direction, will be initiated immediately. It is set for completion by October 2020.
He added that the work was assigned to the Nile Company for the Construction of Roads, and comes as part of his ministry’s plan to establish six bridges along the Cairo-Alexandria Agricultural Road. The total cost of all six bridges is set to stand at EGP 932m.
In the second phase, the Ministry of Transportation is expected to create signs and technical aids, including light cones, traffic breaks, and warning signs, to guide drivers and avoid congestion and accidents.
Elwazir said that the ministry is continuing work on different projects, including roads and bridges, while taking all the protective measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).
He added that the ministry periodically sterilises work sites and uses coronavirus detectors at the beginning and end of the work day on workers and engineers at work sites.
