Telecom Egypt (TE) has announced a partnership contract with a consortium of global telecommunications service providers to create the “2Africa” submarine cable.
The 2Africa cable will pass through 16 African countries, and aims to enhance communication services and develop future Internet services in Africa and the Middle East.
TE also signed a transit agreement with members of the Cable Alliance and Indian telecommunications company Airtel. The agreement will provide modern and unique ground paths in Egypt using various paths to connect the Red and Mediterranean Seas with new landing stations in Ras Gharib and Suez.
The new cable is one of the largest marine cable projects in the world, and will connect Europe, through Egypt, with 21 landing points in 16 African countries. The cable is expected to enter service by the end of 2023.
Adel Hamed, Managing Director and CEO of TE, said that the company’s participation in the 2Africa marine cable system represents an important step in the company’s continuous endeavour to participate in achieving digital transformation in Africa.
Cable 2 Africa will meet the urgent needs of Internet capacities in much of Africa, as well as the increasing demands for international capacities in the Middle East.
