The cabinet approved on Wednesday a draft decision for a tripartite partnership agreement providing technical assistance in developing Egypt’s food wholesale market.

The agreement stands between the government, the Semiramis Company for International Trade and the French Development Agency (AFD).

The programme aims to develop the wholesale food trade in Egypt by providing the government with basic recommendations related to improving supply chains.

It will also ensure the quality of food supplies, whilst maximising the use of food products and logistical services. It will conduct studies to establish a clear strategic direction for Egyptian policy in the field of developing wholesale trade in fresh products

The programme will consist of units specialised in analysing data related to current food pathways and agricultural products distribution. It will also specify sites for establishing wholesale markets, in addition to the pathways for logistic services and cold chain systems.

The regulatory, legislative and governmental frameworks related to food supplies will be studied, as well as partnerships with the private sector and communication methods.

In Wednesday’s cabinet meeting, headed by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, two draft decisions to amend some provisions of the executive regulations of the Law on Organizing Universities No. 49 were approved. This will see the establishment of the Faculty of Specific Education at Sohag University, and the Faculty of Physical Education at Suez University.

The cabinet also approved measures aimed at reducing the burdens on faltering industries, whether affiliated with the private sector or public. This would come following the increase in these industries’ debts on the back of applying the contractual provisions stipulated in contracts for the supply of natural gas.

The approval was given to exempt all industrial companies from contractual clauses, with the exemptions standing at about EGP 5.3bn.

During the meeting, the cabinet agreed to adopt the decisions and recommendations issued by the Ministerial Committee’s 62nd session, held on 18 May, to settle investment disputes.

The cabinet also agreed to establish an agreement between the Ministry of Education and publishing companies to print and distribute educational books for pre-school and primary students.
