President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi has reviewed the current developments in the Libyan crisis during a meeting with the Egypt’s Head of the General Intelligence Service Abbas Kamel.
During the meeting, Al-Sisi also followed up on the arrival back in the country of Egyptian workers who were arrested in Libya.
Discussions on the Libyan crisis came in light of the recent Cairo Declaration initiative and the implementation of its provisions, especially the ceasefire, presidency spokesperson Bassam Rady said in a statement on Thursday.
During the meeting, Al-Sisi directed for the continued use of all necessary measures to preserve the safety and lives of Egyptians abroad.
Al-Sisi and Kamel also reviewed the latest developments in the general security situation, especially regarding combating terrorism and extremist ideology.
The president directed for the concerned authorities to make every effort to maintain security for citizens, establish community stability throughout Egypt, and provide an appropriate environment for development and economic progress.
On Wednesday, 23 Egyptian workers who were detained and abused by militias allied to the internationally recognised Government of National Accord (GNA) in Libya returned to Egypt. Their release and repatriation home came after Libyan authorities said they had arrested the perpetrators of the Egyptians’ detention.
Egypt had coordinated with Libyan authorities to free the workers after strict orders by Al-Sisi to act promptly.
Earlier this month, Al-Sisi announced the Cairo Declaration, a peace initiative to end the civil war in Libya, which proposes a ceasefire and an elected leadership council.
