A total of EGP 397m in humanitarian compensation has been granted to those affected by confrontations in North Sinai, according to a report by North Sinai Governor Mohamed Abdel Fadil Shousha.
The report outlined the efforts undertaken by various state agencies in compensating those affected by security confrontations with terrorist elements in the governorate between October 2015 and May 2020. It was submitted to Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly by Shousha, for the Prime Minister’s review.
Of total humanitarian assistance given to families and individuals, a total of about EGP 385m has been spent until May 2020. This has come in addition to providing support for various cases that are not listed under different regulations.
The report also indicated that the total disbursed as medical assistance until the end of May 2020 amounted to EGP 204.4m. This covers the provision of various medical and health services, in addition to medications and medical supplies required.
The medical assistance comes as part of cooperation protocols signed between the Ministry Health and a number of Egyptian universities, as well as the National Heart Institute (NHI). The cooperation protocol was put in place to provide medical services to families in the North Sinai Governorate, and in supporting the Al-Arish Hospital.
In the report, Shousha emphasised that a total of EGP 3.6bn was granted in agricultural compensation and for rebuilding work. The sum also covered the consequences of the Rawda Mosque attack, in which over 300 civilians were killed and hundreds more wounded in November 2017.
Of this total amount, EGP 2.7bn has been spent until May 2020. Contributions and community assistance provided by a number of institutions and civil society organisations have amounted to EGP 38.6m.
The report added that by the end of May 2020, the compensation given to the families of martyrs and the injured amounted to EGP 206.7m.
Madbouly reaffirmed the continuation provision of all support and assistance to North Sinai residents, especially with regard to humanitarian and medical assistance.
The Prime Minister emphasised that, in its war against terrorism, the state will not forget its role in achieving sustainable development in various sectors, especially in Sinai. He noted that as the state will continue providing various aspects of care and support to the people.
Madbouly said that the state also values the role played by civil society organisations and institutions as part of this, in cooperation with the various government agencies.
