The Egyptian Senate elections will be held on 11 and 12 August, according to Lasheen Ibrahim, Chairperson of National Election Committee (NEC).
The NEC said that the election process for expatriate Egyptians is set to start on 9 and 10 August, with the election result to be announced on 19 August.
The committee added that the procedures for re-elections will start on 8 and 9 September, while the re-elections for expatriate Egyptians will start on 6 and 7 September. The final results will be announced before 16 September.
On Thursday, President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi ratified the draft laws governing legislative elections. These include a law on the Senate’s formation and other laws on the exercise of political rights.
The Senate law states that it should include 300 members, two thirds of whom will be elected in a direct ballot through a closed-list and individual system. The remaining third will be appointed by the president. At least 10% of the total number of seats are allocated to women.
The committee will ensure that all state-imposed precautionary measures to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) will be adopted during the voting process.
