Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Mohamed Abdel Aaty and Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities Assem El-Gazzar discussed, on Tuesday, the measures needed to rationalise water consumption.
The two ministers also explored how to maximise the use of available water resources considering the country’s water scarcity issue.
During the virtual meeting, Abdel Aaty reviewed the quantities of water allocated for Egypt’s urban expansion plans. He also highlighted the detailed plan to expand desalination plants in coastal governorates as part of the National Water Strategy 2037.
The minister addressed the tripartite treatment of wastewater on the Rashid branch of the River Nile, and reusing treated water in irrigating trees.
El-Gazzar touched on the expansion plan for the construction of seawater desalination plants along coastal governorates, as well as the expansion of tripartite wastewater treatment.
Both ministers stressed the need to expand upon water taps that regulate water consumption in homes, government and social facilities, and places of worship.
El-Gazzar stressed the importance of putting in place and intensifying penalties on water wastage, whether in car washing or in streets.
The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation’s strategy for regulating water use is based on four objectives, namely: enhancing the quality of water; decreasing water wastage; developing Egypt’s water resources; and providing the suitable environment for integrated water management.
