Egypt’s manufacturing and extractive industries index, without crude oil and petroleum products, recorded 86.86 during May, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).
The figures come as part of primary data issued by CAPMAS on Monday. The May figures reflected a 7.5% decrease on the 93.86 reported in April.
Beverages manufacturing reached 171.2 in May, a 58.1% increase on the 108.3 reported in April, due to the increase in demand during the summer.
Computer, electronics, and optical products index reached 124.7 in May, a 33.3% increase on the 93.6 reported in April. The increase has been attributed to the high demand for medical products due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis.
Food products index declined to 124.1 in May, compared to the 165.9 reported in April, reflecting a decrease of 25.2%. The decrease has been attributed to the reduced production capacity and factory closures on the back of the global pandemic.
Tobacco products manufacturing reached 76.2 during May, a 33.3% decrease on the 114.2 reported in April. The decrease reflects the low sales and high tobacco product prices, in addition to the nationwide cafes closures that were applied as part of precautionary measures to curb the virus’ spread.
