Egypt has continued to see a decline in the number of infections due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), reporting a decline in cases for the fourth consecutive week. Some hospitals have closed their isolation facilities for COVID-19 patients, and returned to providing normal health services.

On Wednesday, Egypt’s Ministry of Health reported 123 new coronavirus infections, with the total number of infections since the pandemic began in Egypt now standing at 94,875. The ministry reported 18 new fatalities on Wednesday, increasing the total to 4,930 deaths.  The number of recoveries has also increased as 47,182 cases have been discharged from quarantine facilities at hospitals.

In the meantime, the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the aerosol transmission of airborne diseases and viruses, such as COVID-19, has been underestimated. The WHO noted that, if the significance of suspected aerosol spread is confirmed, we will have to reconsider guidelines on social distancing, ventilation systems, and shared spaces.

Mohamed Othman Al-Khosht, President of Cairo University, said that a scientific team from the university has succeeded in identifying the genetic fingerprint of the coronavirus in Egypt.

In televised statements on Tuesday, Al-Khosht noted that this will contribute to the treatment protocol for the virus in the country. He explained that Cairo University has assigned five scientific teams to conduct research and deep studies on the novel disease.
