Egypt’s Supreme Council for Media Regulation announced on Saturday that it will set up an operations room to monitor the performance of the news media during the upcoming Senate elections.

The operations room will be responsible for both monitoring media coverage and following up on problems that media professionals and journalists may experience as they cover the elections.

During Saturday’s meeting, the council, which is headed by Karam Gabr, agreed on a range of new steps and collaborations to improve and stimulate Egypt’s news media field. This includes the council’s decision to launch a new campaign entitled “Cherish Your Art”, aimed at encouraging artists to positively influence society.

Additionally, it will set up an extensive variety of training sessions with the National Training Academy that will see cooperation with and input from several national institutions. The plan will also see partnerships with international media personalities, to provide training courses for Egypt’s media professionals.

This is in addition to the launch of a series of major regional and international awards in journalism and media, including for best journalist; best programme presenter; best article; and best press and media coverage.

In the next few weeks, the council will also hold a workshop outlining certain criteria and guidelines that will be put in place for the next Ramadan season.
