Egypt has expressed its readiness to resume the African Union (AU) sponsored talks on the Ethiopian dam, on the bases of outcomes of the 21 July mini-summit, and the ministerial meeting on 3 August, with Ethiopia and Sudan, Egypt’s Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation said.
On Monday, negotiators from the three countries involved in negotiations on the huge dam, held virtual meetings to address the disputed points on the filling and operation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
The parties agreed to postpone the meetings for one week, until 17 August, upon the request of the Sudanese delegation.
In the 21 July mini-summit that gathered leaders of the three countries in addition to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, and in the ministerial meeting on 3 August, the parties agreed to work on achieving a legally binding agreement on the disputed issues.
The meeting was held despite both Egypt and Sudan announcing they are suspending participation in the negotiations with Ethiopia due to its violation of the agreed points. Both Sudan and Egypt are holding internal discussions on Addis Ababa’s actions.
The current round of negotiations, which started on 27 July, is being observed by the AU Assembly Bureau, alongside representatives from AU member states, the US, and the European Union (EU).
