The New York-based Tribeca Film Festival has announced that its 20th Anniversary edition will take place in New York City from 9 to 20 June 2021. In a press release, the festival said that the 2021 dates are to ensure the festival moves forward in the safest environment.
For two decades, the Tribeca Film Festival has showcased storytellers from around the world who have used art to inspire positive change. The festival has also been a game-changer in introducing audiences to new forms of storytelling.
It was established in the aftermath of 9/11, to bring people together through the arts and send a signal of resilience to the world. The Tribeca Film Festival looks forward to bringing the community together once again, to celebrate emerging and established voices. It also looks to allow visitors to discover award-winning filmmakers and creators, and enjoy innovative experiences.
“We look forward to celebrating the 20th anniversary and to honouring what our founders Jane Rosenthal and Robert De Niro have made a reality in bringing storytellers and communities together,” said Paula Weinstein, Tribeca Enterprises Chief Creative Officer.
Additionally, there will be dedicated space in the 2021 festival to celebrate films whose premieres were not able to take place in 2020. All 2020 Tribeca-selected filmmakers have been invited to showcase their films and celebrate their postponed premieres as part of the 20th-anniversary edition.
Submissions for the 2021 festival will open on 8 September 2020 for all categories, namely: feature and short films; episodic storytelling; immersive; and branded entertainment. In the upcoming edition next year, there will also be newly added section dedicated to online premieres as part of the official slate, bringing the Tribeca experience, and the best in independent film, to online audiences nationwide.
To accommodate creators affected by the pandemic, the festival noted that the submission period has been extended by three weeks, with the new deadline now pushed back to January. The eligibility rules have also been adjusted to include films that were previously screened at online festivals.
