The families of Egyptian healthcare workers who have died from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) will receive financial support, according to Minister of Health and Population Hala Zayed.
In remarks on Tuesday, Zayed said that medical teams working at Egypt’s quarantine hospitals are an example to be followed in sincerity and dedication to their work to help patients. She also asserted that history will remember their sacrifices during the pandemic.
The minister’s remarks came during a virtual meeting with the medical team at the Al Maamoura Chest Hospital. During the meeting, she expressed her sincere condolences to the families of two doctors, Ahmed Madi and Mohamed Nadir, who died from complications due to the coronavirus.
She has also confirmed the insistence of the country’s leadership in supporting Egypt’s medical teams, both financially and morally.
Health Ministry Spokesperson Khaled Mogahed said that Zayed was keen on amending Law No 14, to establish the Medical Professions Risk Fund.
According to directives from Egypt’s political leadership, the fund would financially support deceased and injured medical workers, and pay compensation retroactively dating back to the first coronavirus case in Egypt.
Mogahed added that the minister has also directed for the necessary support to be provided to the families and children of medical, administrative and technical staff working in isolation, fever, and chest hospitals. The support also extends to workers at central laboratories, investigation teams, and ambulance services, who sacrificed their lives while performing their work against the pandemic.
The Egyptian Medical Syndicate (EMS) announced, on Tuesday, that the number of coronavirus deaths among doctors since the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak in Egypt has risen to 149.
