Egypt’s Ministry of Interior has refuted claims that inmates at Alexandria’s Borg Al-Arab Prison are suffering from deteriorating health and a lack of medical care at the facility, according to a statement on Sunday.
The ministry noted that the claims, published via the Facebook page of a TV satellite channel affiliated to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group, are baseless, the statement added.
It is also keen to provide all prisons across Egypt with the needed medical and health care through hospitals affiliated to the country’s prisons system. These healthcare facilities are equipped with the latest medical devices and qualified medical teams, as well as doctors in various specialties, the statement noted.
Moreover, medical conv0ys of doctors in all specialties also regularly visit Egypt’s prisons to conduct medical examinations for all inmates, and provide them with needed medicines, the statement continued.
It noted that such claims “are part of incitement that the Muslim Brotherhood practices through its affiliated media outlets against Egypt state institutions, and as part of the group desperate attempts to incite public opinion”, the statement concluded.
The Ministry of Interior said that it has, since the start of the coronavirus outbreak in Egypt, been undertaking all precautionary measures as implemented by the government.
This includes carrying out disinfection and sterilisation efforts at prisons across the country, as part of the measures to curb the coronavirus’ spread. It is also to ensure a safe environment is provided for inmates.
