Egypt’s National Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Gemini Enterprise Africa (GEA) to support building and developing human capabilities and entrepreneurship.
Hala El-Said, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, said that the tasks of the Institute, which is the ministry’s training arm, include drafting national indicators for governance, competitiveness and sustainable development.
The institute is also concerned with issuing periodic national reports on these developments, and will work to upgrade Egypt’s international classification in international reports on governance and competitiveness. Work will also be carried out on building and developing the human resources, and providing advisory services and training to private institutions.
Regarding the cooperation between the institute and GEA under the MoU, which is valid for three years, El-Said said that the two parties have designed and implemented innovative training programmes in areas of common interest.
These are represented in entrepreneurship, digital transformation, project management, sustainable development, and governance. The minister explained that these programmes aim to raise the competence of young Egyptians for entrepreneurship roles, and to qualify them for digitisation and the fourth industrial revolution.
This is set to take place through the implementation of research and graduation projects that reflect the common desire of the two parties to support Egypt’s economy and the sustainable development strategy, under its Vision 2030.
The National Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development’s Executive Director, Sharifa Sherif, said that the institute aims to facilitate procedures and develop the rules governing dealing with state institutions and its various agencies.
It will also look to coordinate between the relevant stakeholders, whether at the central or local level, in accordance with the standards of good governance. Additionally, the institute will monitor and follow-up on Egypt’s status relating to the indicators of governance, competitiveness and sustainable regional and international development.
At the same time, the institute will develop a national strategy and a national action plan to improve these areas in coordination with the various units of the state’s administrative apparatus.
Sherif said that that the MoU also reflects awareness on the importance of inter-institutional cooperation to support sustainable human development.
It will maintain the focus on the institute’s role in the nationwide formation, qualification and upgrading of human knowledge and skills in all areas.
This is designed to ensure the efficient and effective management of state resources and achieve sustainable development in accordance with the Egypt Vision 2030.
Sherif said that the MoU aims to support women and people with special needs, through the establishment of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), both at the local and Africa levels.
Adly Wajih Adly Touma, GEA CEO and Managing Director, said the company is an investment company affiliated to the Orascom Holding Group. It works on entrepreneurship and providing support for emerging companies through a complete partnership investment model and basic financing programmes.
GEA is developing a new vision between entrepreneurs and their supporters, whereby cooperation replaces competition. This is based on the company’s extended partnership network, pointing out that GEA has extended its influence across Africa by facing development challenges. The company has taken part in preparing and building the capacities of promising young Africans, supporting them to create sustainable business.
