The National Elections Authority (NEA), headed by Lashin Ibrahim, announced the candidate lists for the House of Representatives elections, featuring 4,006 candidates in the individual system, and eight party lists.
The eight lists that have been approved include: two in the Cairo, South and Central Delta sector, represented by the National List for Egypt and the Independent Alliance List; two lists in the North, Central and South Upper Egypt sectors, which are the National List for Egypt and Egypt’s Call “Nidaa Misr” List; two lists were accepted in the East Delta sector, including the National List for Egypt and the Sons of Egypt list; in the West Delta sector, two lists were accepted, one of which is the National List for Egypt, and the second is the Egyptian Call List.
A total of 87 candidates appear on the Egypt’s Call List in the West Delta Sector Division, with the same number of candidates appearing on the list in the East Delta Sector.
The number of candidates for the Nidaa Misr List in the North, Central and Southern Upper Egypt Sector reached 203.
The National List for Egypt has put forward 87 candidates in the East Delta Sector District, and the same number for the West Delta Sector Division.
The National List for Egypt has 203 candidates for the North and Central Upper Egypt sector, and the same number for the Cairo, South and Central Delta Sector constituencies.
The NEA has reviewed the reasons and grounds on which it has excluded a number of candidates in the individual system and a number of advanced lists. Some potential candidates were excluded due to their not having performed military service or having received an exemption from it. Others were excluded due to failing the medical fitness check.
Elections for the first phase for Egyptians living abroad will be held on 21, 22 and 23 October, with elections inside Egypt to take place on 24 and 25 October. The results will be announced no later than 1 November.
The run-off elections for the first phase will be held on 21, 22 and 23 November for Egyptian expatriates, and 23 and 24 November inside Egypt, with the NEA to announce the final results no later than 30 November.
The second phase of the elections will be held on 4, 5 and 6 November for Egyptian expatriates, and 7 and 8 November inside Egypt, with the results to be announced no later than 15 November.
The run-offs for the second phase will take place on 5, 6 and 7 December for Egyptians abroad, and on 7 and 8 December inside Egypt. The NEA will announce the final results no later than 14 December.
A total of 568 seats will be up for grabs in Egypt’s upcoming House of Representatives elections, while another 28 seats (5%) to be appointed by the president, bringing the chamber seats to a total of 596.
The 568 seats are split equally between individual and party list deputies, in which there will be 284 candidates from each category. The House of Representatives election law stipulates that 25% of the total seats must be reserved for women.
Article 10 of the House of Representatives’ Law, or Law 140 of 2020, stipulates that a hopeful seeking to run in parliamentary elections should submit a number of papers, including a medical check-up document showing that he/she tests negative for drugs.
