US President Donald Trump has been taken to hospital as his campaign manager Bill Stepien and former White House counsellor Kellyanne Conway both tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) early Saturday.
On Friday, Trump was taken to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, according to White House physician Dr Sean Conley.
In a memo shared via Twitter by White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany, Conley said that Trump is doing “very well,” and that he “is not requiring any supplemental oxygen”.
He added that the President will stay in hospital for “the next few days,” with Remdesivir therapy already initiated. Meanwhile, the President, himself, tweeted that things “are going well.”
Earlier, Trump announced that both he and his wife, the First Lady Melania, tested positive for the coronavirus. The diagnosis comes at an awkward time for the president, with only a month left until the presidential election, in which Trump faces his Democrat rival Joe Biden.
Biden announced, on Friday, that he and his wife, Jill, had tested negative for COVID-19.
“I’m happy to report that Jill and I have tested negative for COVID-19. Thank you to everyone for your messages of concern. I hope this serves as a reminder: wear a mask, keep social distance, and wash your hands,” Biden tweeted.
The US tops the world’s ranking in terms of confirmed coronavirus cases, with over 7.5 million cases and 213,526 fatalities.
Since the outbreak began, Trump has been under fire due to his handling of the pandemic, with the number of cases continuing to rise nationwide.
