The Egyptian House of Architecture at Cairo’s Darb El- Labana, affiliated with the Cultural Development Fund Creative Centres, will organise a symposium, on Monday, in celebration of World Architecture Day.
Created by the International Union of Architects (UIA) in 1985, World Architecture Day’s theme this year is “Toward a better urban future”. Many Arab and Egyptian Architects will participate in the celebration, including representatives from the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS).
Faiqa Bijawi, Vice-President of the International Committee on Historic Cities, Towns and Villages (CIVVIH) will attend the celebration and talk about Egypt’s historic methods of construction.
Dina Al-Mahdi, the founder of the Cairo Heritage School, is set to talk about documenting forgotten opportunities for the future of architectural and urbanism heritage.
Dr Heba Safi El-Din, Director of the House of Architecture and Co-Director of the Architecture and Children Work Program at the UIA, will present a session about the future of construction.
The UIA, which represents 3.2 million architects worldwide, created the day annually on the first Monday of October in parallel with the UN World Habitat Day. The celebration aims to draw the attention of professionals, as well as the public, to problems concerning cities and habitat.
The UIA will also host a live webinar to celebrate the World Architecture Day, featuring six panels of global experts who will discuss how architects and professionals in related fields can address the challenges facing today’s cities. These include water and sanitation, public spaces, air quality and housing.
