Egypt’s Prosecutor General Hamada El-Sawy ordered, on Monday, the release of Egyptian journalist Basma Mostafa, after she was interrogated over accusations that she published false news.
Mostafa, who works for the local Al-Manassa media outlet, was detained in Luxor and questioned over accusations relating to the false news. She has denied all charges.
According to a statement by the Public Prosecution, she is accused of exploiting her social media account to promote false news that would disturb public peace and security. The accusations take into consideration her work on some news websites, covering social issues and issues of public concern including the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The Public Prosecution office had checked Mostafa’s accounts on social media, and found them to be deactivated. Mostafa, herself, has denied all knowledge of how they came to be inactive.
Despite her release, investigations into the accusations against her will continue.
