A high-level Egyptian medical delegation, headed by Egyptian Ambulance Organization (EAO) Chief and Adviser to the Minister of Health Mohamed Gad, arrived in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, on Tuesday evening.
The delegation will carry out triaging and evaluation of those injured in the Sudanese revolution which took place in December 2018. The Egyptian mission includes eight consultants specialising in general surgery, thoracic medicine, neuro surgery, urology, anaesthesia, plastic surgery, among other fields.
The delegation was received at Khartoum Airport by Egypt’s Ambassador to Sudan, Hossam Issa, and other Egyptian Embassy representatives. Also present at the delegation’s arrival were: Director of Curative Medicine at Sudan’s Ministry of Health Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim; Head of the Technical Committee dealing with injured victims of the December Revolution, Amer Abadi; and the Assistant Senior Advisor to the Sudanese Prime Minister Amjad Farid.
Ambassador Issa said that the medical delegation’s visit comes as part of an agreement between Egypt’s Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouly and Sudan’s Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdouk. The agreement was put into effect during Madbouly’s last visit to Sudan in August.
He explained that the delegation will make the necessary examinations of all victims, either providing treatment in Khartoum or providing reports for cases that are to travel to Cairo for treatment.
For his part, Gad said that following the evaluation of those injured, a treatment plan will be developed that will either take place in Sudan or through Ministry of Health hospitals in Egypt, according to the requirements of each case.
He indicated that Egypt will continue to support Sudan’s health system by providing medical teams and training programmes at Egyptian Ministry of Health hospitals, alongside other healthcare-related initiatives and joint programmes.
Ibrahim pointed out that the Higher Committee for the Treatment of the Injured, which was recently created by Sudan’s Council of Ministers, will commence joint cooperation with the Egyptian medical team on Wednesday, to examine injuries.
