Mohamed Maait, Minister of Finance, said that the Egyptian economy was able to withstand the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis, and contain its repercussions, thanks to the economic reforms over the past years.
During his meeting with the Swiss Ambassador in Cairo Paul Garnier on Thursday, Maait affirmed that the government is continuing with structural reforms in a way that makes it more capable of positively dealing with internal and external challenges.
He pointed out that the coronavirus crisis reflected the need for countries to rely more on their own resources, and this is what Egypt pursued before the pandemic, as the government focused on achieving self-sufficiency in various sectors.
He said that the government looks forward to cooperation with the Swiss side in supporting the digital transformation of the Egyptian economy, raising the efficiency of public financial management, and developing the capacities of workers in tax and customs departments.
For his part, the Swiss Ambassador praised Egypt’s economic reform at the level of financial and monetary policies which helped the country effectively handle the crisis. He affirmed his country’s keenness to enhance cooperation with Egypt in various sectors, and to provide technical support in the fields of structural reform and the development of human cadres.
