Egypt’s consumer price index for urban consumers (CPI-U) increased to 4.5% on an annual basis in October 2020, compared to 3.7% in September 2020, the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) said on Tuesday.
The agency added that the monthly CPI-U stood at 1.8% in October, up from 0.3% in September.
It added that the whole country’s CPI recorded 109.9 points for October, reflecting an increase of 2.3% on September.
CAPMAS attributed this increase to the rise in prices of the following: general and technical secondary education group by 56.6%; pre-primary and basic education by 20.1%; higher education by 13.2%; post-secondary general and technical education by 12.3%; vegetables by 7.0%; meat and poultry by 1.2%; garments by 0.2%; and rent by 0.4%.
Goods and services used in home maintenance also increased by 0.7%; patient services and outpatient clinics by 0.6%; newspapers, books, and stationery by 4.2%; hotel services by 13.5%; and personal care by 0.6%.
This comes despite a decrease in the prices of fruit by 7.9%, cereals and bread by 0.4%, and fish and seafood by 0.4%.
According to the agency, Egypt’s annual inflation recorded 4.6% for October 2020, compared to 2.4% in October 2019.
