The Portuguese football star and Juventus forward, Cristiano Ronaldo, has won the Golden Foot award for 2020, beating Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, Egypt and Liverpool star Mohamed Salah, and Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski.
Ronaldo received the most votes by fans, after a shortlist of 10 players was prepared, which also included Giorgio Chiellini, Neymar, Sergio Ramos, Sergio Aguero, Gerard Pique, and Arturo Vidal.
The Golden Foot is awarded at the international level, and is organised annually in the French city of Monaco. The most prominent criteria of the award are that the nominated player must be at least 28 years old, and have special individual and team abilities.
The winner is chosen from among ten candidates nominated by a committee of specialists, with fans also able to vote for one of the ten candidates via the award’s official website.
The winner leaves a footprint in the Football Hall of Fame’s Champions Promenade, a walkway for football celebrities on the beaches of the Principality of Monaco. Footballers may only win the Golden Foot award once. The title’s 2019 winner was Real Madrid’s Luka Modric.
