Ambassador Mohamed Idris, Egypt’s permanent representative to the United Nations (UN), has confirmed the country’s intention to host the 9th Conference of States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption, on 13–17 December 2021 in Sharm El-Sheikh.
This came in the speech delivered by the Ambassador during his participation in the UN celebration of the International Anti-Corruption Day on Thursday.
Idris stressed the importance of international cooperation and advancing multilateral action to confront corruption and its transnational repercussions.
He expressed Egypt’s appreciation for the efforts of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in combating corruption, despite the pressing circumstances imposed by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
He pointed out that Cairo and the UN participated in celebrating this International Day by organising a virtual workshop on protecting sport from corruption.
The meeting also reviewed national efforts to combat corruption based on the principles of the rule of law, consolidating accountability and transparency, and respecting human rights, as well as integrating efforts between the government and civil society.
Representatives from several countries, international financial institutions, and academic bodies have also participated in the celebration.
